Provincial Interiors

Provincial/Shabby Chic style décor brings all the charm of a much-loved cottage and combines it with a freshness and possibly exaggerated distressed look to create a clean and feminine look that is distinct from genuinely old and weathered interiors. A Shabby Chic look includes furniture and homewares that are chosen for their appearance of age and un-apologetic signs of wear and tear. Shabby Chic tends to favour whites and other colours mixed with white rather than the earthy tones of a Rustic Style.

Painted surfaces abound in a Shabby Chic interior and it is a great style to use if you are handy and can create your own re-vitalised second hand pieces. A coat of paint and some ragging, rubbing or distressing of any kind will help form a sound base for this style. When it comes to this style, you cannot go wrong with pale, soft hues of any kind but keeping to quite a narrow palette rather than mixing things up too much. White and off-whites of any kind are core. Painted walls alongside creative wallpapers are also an effective way to bring out that cottage home feel.

Choose simple solid wood furniture with fewer decorations. Painted pieces are perfect. If you possess antique and vintage interior design pieces such as a jelly cupboard, pie safe or the kitchen queen wood cook stove, now is the time to make use of these items as they make great accents. French provincial pieces can work within Shabby Chic if they are light colored, aged and/or not too embellished with ornate carvings.

Fabrics are where you can add your flair with stripes and checks or floral patterns helping to compose a distinctive look for this beautiful unpretentious style. Swags, garlands, appliques, ruffles and cherubs are traditional in Shabby Chic but to keep it chic don’t go overboard.

Many people forget the floor when it comes to Shabby Chic style decorating. While natural wood is the most popular floor treatment, limed timber or timber-look floors work well too. Even flooring can be painted with patterns and designs to achieve a weathered and cottagey look.

Shabby Chic can lean towards a beachy feel or it take influences from the Mediterranean or North American Shaker movement. At Zohi Interiors, we love the casual and homey feel of Shabby Chic and believe that it can have a definite millennial bent to it by under-doing the style just a little. The palette is so dreamy and the textures and lines so organic. Who doesn’t love a comfortable cocoon of ‘easy’ to come home to?! By using the Shabby Chic style theme, you can easily create a naturalist and romantic space for your home too.
