On The Road To Timbuktu - Tamegroute: Ancient Craft for Your Modern Home

Tamegroute is a little town on the edge of the Sahara and off the beaten track in Morocco. Visiting Tamegroute was a highlight of our 2023 tour – after years of admiring the artisan pottery its famous for and being familiar with its centuries of history and tradition, it felt like a dream to actually be there in the flesh.

Tamegroute is also famous for its Koranic Library. The collection of writings dates to the 11th century and is housed within a beautiful Mosque where people come to pray on a daily basis – and annually to find a wife! There is even the chance to request a miracle by knocking on the sacred door.

                                   Our Tamegroute Host and Potter

Although it was mid Autum, it was still hot. You can easily understand why the locals live within the walls of the heavily shaded kasbah! It was fascinating to walk through the alleyways and peak into open doorways and twists and turns in the earthen labyrinth.

Tamegroute pottery was seen from one end of Morocco to the other, in high end restaurants, such as El Fenn, as well as budget cafes. It is a sought after artisan product that graces homes all around the Western world with its distinctive green or gold glaze. Every piece of Tamegroute pottery is unique. If you like your décor cookie-cutter perfect, this is not the product for you. If you love to support ancient traditions and community businesses and you have more of an artist’s eye for organic form and things made with the human hand, then you’ll adore Tamegroute pieces as much as we do. Just one piece can be a rustic feature on display case or sideboard or you can create a sophisticated table setting with plates, mugs and bowls.

We love to help our customers with sourcing tamegroute and we can ship it directly from Morocco to anywhere in the world including Australia. Reach out to us at hello@zohiinteriors.com.au for your specific requirements.

The accommodation is this town was basic but situated in the gardens of a former Sufi order. The guesthouse was also an easy walk to the Mosque and the potters. It was fascinating to see the potters at work ... they sit in a hole in the ground which levels up with the potter’s wheel on the ground. The kilns are made from the same ubiquitous clay that the kasbah is made from. The method has remained un-changed for hundreds of years and there are just a handful of families that supply tamegroute to the world. Everything is this tiny town is within shouting distance.

We were lucky to pick up some not-so-traditional pieces, made by one of the Tamegroute artisans stretching his creative wings. Beautiful Sahara Henna Plates with intricate embellishment make for wonderful wall décor or display in a modern Boho Chic or eclectic home.

Our favourite score was the stunning Rubaei Candlestick with four candleholders. We now also offer a new glaze which has a smooth and glossier finish with the same deep luscious green of the more traditional tamegroute. This is our Ourika Range. Any piece can be made with this glorious glaze.
