For hundreds of years, and throughout South America, a traditional style of pottery known as La Chamba pottery is made. It has become popular for its earthy and contemporary look despite being a craft that has been handed down to the young women for generations. It helps create sustainable income opportunities for the people of the Andean villages where it is made. The rich black texture and is made by crushing weathered rock together with serpentinite and clay. Every piece is shaped by hand, then left in the sun to dry and finally polished with semi-precious stones by hand. Each piece has a a lovely patina and is slightly individual
